MAINTENANCE BYPASS: A Powerful SIS Function That Must Be Controlled! ![]()
![]()
Imagine a plant shutdown signal is being generated while a transmitter is being removed for maintenance.
If the shutdown function remains active, the process may trip unnecessarily.
So what can be done?
A Maintenance Bypass may be applied β but only under a controlled and authorized procedure.
What is a Maintenance Bypass?
A Maintenance Bypass is a controlled mechanism used to temporarily prevent a safety function or selected SIS input from initiating its intended safety action while maintenance or testing is being performed.
In an SIS, bypassing a safety function means:
The protection provided by that function may be temporarily unavailable.
Therefore, it is not simply an ON/OFF switch.
Example
Consider a high-pressure shutdown function:
Pressure Transmitter β Safety PLC β Shutdown Valve
During transmitter maintenance:
Transmitter removed
![]()
SIS input may indicate a trip condition
![]()
Shutdown could occur
An authorized maintenance bypass may temporarily prevent that particular input from causing the shutdown.
What Happens During a Bypass?
The bypassed safety function may no longer provide its normal protection.
Therefore, a proper bypass process should consider:
Authorization
Responsible personnel
Bypass duration
Risk assessment
Clear indication of bypass status
Operator notification
Compensating measures
Removal of bypass after maintenance
Dangerous Practice
βJust bypass it until maintenance is finished.β
This is extremely risky.
If the bypass is forgotten:
Hours β Days β Weeks
The SIS could remain partially degraded without anyone realizing it.
Good SIS Practice
A maintenance bypass should be:
Authorized
Traceable
Time-controlled where applicable
Clearly indicated
Logged
Reviewed
Removed immediately after the work
Verified after restoration
Remember
Maintenance bypass β defeating the SIS
It is a controlled temporary impairment of a safety function performed to allow specific maintenance or testing activities.
The real danger isnβt only applying a bypass.
The real danger is applying a bypass without controlling the riskβor forgetting to remove it.
