But every time, there is no real process problem.
After seeing the same alarm hundreds of times, the operator may start thinking:
“It’s probably another nuisance alarm.”

What is a Nuisance Alarm?
A nuisance alarm is an alarm that is generated without a meaningful abnormal process condition requiring operator action.
It may be caused by:
Instrument problems
Poor alarm settings
Electrical noise
Process fluctuations
Incorrect alarm delays
Poorly selected alarm limits
Equipment startup/shutdown conditions
Faulty configuration
Example
Suppose a pressure transmitter normally fluctuates between:
9.8–10.2 bar
The alarm is configured at:
10.0 bar

HIGH PRESSURE
The process may be perfectly healthy—but the alarm keeps appearing.
That’s a nuisance alarm.
Why Are Nuisance Alarms Dangerous?
Too many nuisance alarms can cause:
Alarm flooding
Operator distraction
Alarm fatigue
Important alarms being overlooked
Delayed operator response
Increased operational risk
The most dangerous situation is when a genuine critical alarm appears among dozens of meaningless alarms.
How Can Nuisance Alarms Be Reduced?
Review alarm setpoints
Apply appropriate deadband
Use suitable alarm delays
Check instrument calibration
Investigate process fluctuations
Suppress alarms during appropriate operating states
Perform alarm rationalization
Periodically review alarm performance
Golden Rule:
An alarm should exist because an operator needs to know something and take action—not simply because a process value crossed a limit.
Good alarm management doesn’t mean having MORE alarms.
